The Body in the Woods / April Henry / 263 pages / Scary Story, October Challenge

Alexis Frost joined the Portland SAR Team because her high school counselor said she needed an eye-catching extra-curricular to make her stand out in the battle for college scholarships.  Her B average was not enough.  Nick Walker joined because he wanted to prove himself - fast, and strong, and brave.  Ruby McClure has a strong interest in birds, continuity errors, true crime, and gum flavors.  The three high school fledgling searchers are teamed together to search for a missing thirty-four year old autistic man.  Although they encounter several people, they do not find the missing man.  Instead, Alexis finds a murdered girl.
This is a captivating page-turner rife with suspects and suspense.  Although the ending is hair-raising and frightening, it is equally satisfying and reassuring.
