In the Unlikely Event / Judy Blume / 402 pages / 20th Century Historical Fiction Challenge

"Was this how it was going to be:  Always waiting for the next disaster?"  This is typical of the mindset of many Americans in the 50's.  The Depression, World War II, the Korean War, and the threat of nuclear holocaust kept nerves on edge.  Residents of Elizabeth, New Jersey endured the additional stress of three plane crashes within eight weeks resulting in numerous deaths to both passengers and crew (116) and civilians on the ground.  Although many saw "sinister forces conspiring to bring about the crashes in rapid fire succession, each plane failed for a different reason, and none of them indicated any pattern of sabotage or nefarious activity."  We follow young Miri Ammerhan, her friends, family, acquaintances, and first love as those terrible times redirect the course of her life.  "Life is a series of unlikely events, adding up to a rich, complicated whole.  Who knows what's still to come."  This is a terrific piece of twentieth century historic fiction, giving graphic detail and testimony to the times, the circle of life, and the impact and power of love.

"If you can't trust, you can't love."
"When something so unimaginable happens you need to find a new way to help people see it."
"It's not God's job to decide what happens.  It's his job to help you get through it."
