After Hawk is near fatally shot by a Ukrainian sniper while he is on a protection detail, he and Spenser vow revenge.  The Ukrainian mob is responsible and has even managed to eliminate a jailed informant.  The mob is involved in heroin and nepotism.  Spenser is Hawk's back up as Hawk not only attempts to even the score but to establish a trust fund for the son of the gunned down man and secure its funding from the coffers of the evil perpetrators.  Spenser and Hawk's and Spenser and Susan's relationships add humor, breadth, depth, and thought-provoking insights to a remarkable detective story which is most unfortunately studded with objectionable language.
