Gathering Prey / John Sandford / 407 pages

Readers "have come to expect superb plotting, razor-sharp dialogue, and some of the best characters in suspense fiction from John Sandford" and they get all three and much more in Gathering Prey.  Lucas Davenport is currently investigating the accidental death of a prominent man's wife.  Authorities believe she was murdered and that the husband is the murderer...but they need proof.  Lucas has a most difficult, unsupportive boss, making Lucas chaff.  When his adoptive daughter requests he look into a missing Traveler, he agrees to see what he can find out.  The investigation uncovers a cult-like sub-culture centered around one Pilate, who engages in drugs, sex, and murder.  In addition to being a page-turner filled with not stop action, Gathering Prey is a testament to dedicated law enforcement officers whose courage and determination to uphold the law sometimes demands that they put their lives on the line for the greater good.  Vets who become police officers/ volunteers, utilizing skills honed in combat, are also acknowledged.
