The Winner's Curse / Marie Rutkoski / 355 pages

This is a most intriguing, if slightly unbelievable, love story.  Kestrel is a general's daughter, living in a conquered land.  As such, she has two choices for her future.  She can either become a soldier or she can get married.  The first is anathema to her.  She wants to harm no one.  The second option is a possibility, if she is allowed to choose her own mate.  Kestrel's world is forever altered when she purchases a slave in the market place.  Arin was once part of the ruling class in his newly conquered land and as such has knowledge and skills few can claim.  His training as a blacksmith allows him to plan and prepare for war...a war in which Kestrel is an unwilling accomplice.  The reader is inexorably drawn into their budding relationship...but is Arin's understanding and self sacrifice too good to be true?
