Rain, Reign / Ann M. Martin / 226 pages / Scary November Challenge

Rose Howard has high-functioning autism, or Asbergers.  She is obsessed with homonyms, prime numbers and rules.  She lives with her father in Hatford, New York and is in fifth grade.  School has always been a trial for her, as no one, including her dad, understands her problems.  Her uncle and her dog, Rain, are her only and best friends.  When her father lets Rain outside without his collar during a terrible storm, Rain disappears.  Rose's efforts to find her dog and her righteous, admirable acceptance of his fate, elevate Rose to hero status.  The horrors of Hurricane Susan (Sandy) are well scripted, along with its emotional and psychological impact.
This would be an excellent read-aloud.
