Sky Raiders / Brandon Mull / 421 pages

Five Kingdoms Book 1
Cole Randolph decides to go to a haunted house after trick or treating on Halloween with a group of sixth graders including his best friend, Dalton, and Jenna (on whom he has a crush).  The house proves to have a portal to the Outskirts in the basement.  Kids brave, or foolhardy, enough to enter the basement have been kidnapped to be used as slaves.  Cole managed to hide beneath some drapes but chooses to risk no return to save his friends.  After having been marked as a slave, chained up, and ignored as if he were less than a person, Cole has to fight worries that his life may be over.  He alone was sold to the Sky Raiders but he vows to find his friends who are destined for the High King.  This series is highly recommended for all who love adventure stories rife with the unusual.  Fed by Mr. Mull's scintillating imagination, every page contains wonders to delight, evil to defeat, and friends to rescue.  It is the story of a true hero who consistently places the needs of others above his own.
