The Truth That's In Me / Julie Berry / 274 pages / April Challenge Rain

This is a most unusual puzzle-like novel.  The main character, Judith, is addressing the narrative to the love of her life, Lucas.  Judith was abducted when she was fourteen and held captive for two years.  Another young girl, Lottie, from the same somewhat mysterious community disappeared around the same time.  Before her captor released her, he cut out half Judith's tongue, seemingly making it impossible for her to speak.  When Judith arrives home, she discovers that Lucas plans to marry another.  Her mother treats her as if she has disgraced the family.  When the community is attacked, Judith knows her captor has the wherewithal to save the village.  Should she enlist his help?  At what cost?  The author has done a masterful job of breathing life into her main character and compelling the reader to sympathized and empathize with her.
