Bruised / Sarah Skilton / 274 pages / 9 Ladies Dancing/7 Swans a Swimming Challenge

Imogen has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and is very proud of her hard work, accomplishments, and commitment.  She is caught inside a diner with her brother's ex, Gretchen, a strange young man, and the cashier when a 28 year old man wielding a gun enters to rob the establishment.  Instead of using her skills to disarm the bandit and help the cashier, she hides under a table - as does the young man.  Gretchen, who had gone to bathroom, calls 911.  When the police arrive, a shoot out ensues and Imogen is covered with blood and guilt.  She struggles through her junior year, failing classes, losing her best friend, being suspended from Tae Kwon Do, and dealing with her Dad's newly diagnosed diabetes.  Imogen needs to fight back - to prove all her training is not useless.  She lets loose on Ricky, the young man in the diner, willing him to give her the fight she disparately needs.  He gives her much more.  Although this book did not keep me up all night, it did keep me reading nonstop, hoping that Imogen would get the help she needed...  Beware of inappropriate language and sexual activity, but beautiful descriptive passages and multiple themes certainly make this a worthwhile read.
