The Strangers / Jacqueline West / 308 pages / 8 Maids a Milking December Challenge

Despite all the magic charms placed on the Stone House and its three steadfast guardians, Olive Dunwoody's mathematician parents go missing on Halloween night.  Self-proclaimed wizards Delore, Professor Widdecombe, and their inept apprentice, Walter, attempt to convince Olive to leave the house as its dangerous magic seems to be accelerating.  Olive chooses to remain faithful to her quest to oversee the house, protect her friend, Morton, find his parents, and thwart Annabelle McMartin's determination to return and restore the house to her evil grandfather, Aldous.  Mrs. Dewey, Rutherford's grandmother and Olive's neighbor, insists that an adult stay with her.  Olive chooses "Walter, a slow, seven-foot sub-par sorcerer with a voice like a congested walrus."  This fourth book in the Books of Elsewhere series is not yet the end of a captivating adventure.

"Is it worth it, one might ask, to fight evil with evil, darkness with darkness?"
"Being protected and being trapped could feel like the very same thing."
"Anytime a secret is shared, it grows less safe."
"A little fear is a good thing.  It can protect you like a shield."
