I listened to this book on audio and believe that the sound effects accompanying segues between Upper and Lower London added much to the atmosphere imparted through the text.  A young man, engaged to marry an uptight, upstanding, success-oriented Jessica has his life forever changed - in unexplainable ways - when he stops to help a lady in distress on the streets of London.  His kindness embroils him in assassination attempts, murder, mayhem, and memory cleansing.
