Bombs Over Bikini: the world's first nuclear disaster / Connie Goldsmith / 75 pages

In this non-fiction title, we find out about one of America's most heinous experiments that poisoned a country and displaced its citizens in the name of "science."  After WWII, the military wanted to experiment with A-Bombs and H-Bombs to determine how dangerous they would be to ships and if there was some strategy to escape destruction.  They intentionally chose the Marshall Islands as the test site and convinced the inhabitants of the Bikini Atoll to "temporarily" desert their homes.  In the end, entire populations (including our own Navy) were exposed to radiation, no one still lives on Bikini and the ocean environment was seriously damaged.  This book is great for upper elementary school readers to adults.  It is liberally illustrated with photos and includes extensive notes, index, glossary and sources (age-appropriate books and online films) for more information.  Recommend...I'm pretty sure this is not covered in school curriculum though it should be.
