This first person account relates the life of Quintus Cincinnatus Lovell Dudley as he moves from his nomadic life with his hardware store father, and summers in Tennessee with his mother's people.  When his father marries a wealthy divorcee, Ann Lauterbach, his life is radically altered.  He is financially able to establish roots in St. Louis and attends Country Day School.  All good things come to an end, however, and Quint's idyllic life ends, with the mental illness of his new mother.  The narrative is so detailed and specific, the reader feels transported to 1920's St. Louis, and is invited to intimately step into the fabulously decorated home on Portland Place.
