Neon Rain/James Lee Burke/248 pages/First in Series
Some say that Neon Rain was a slow start for a first in series novel. I beg to differ! I read the book in one sitting and when I finished it at 4 am, "ah" felt like"ah" pulled an all nighter in New Orleans, literally and figuratively. Burke takes the reader on a sensory odyssey much like one feels when they visit the Crescent City. His description of the iconic atmosphere and unique cuisine of the region instantly brings the reader down to street level, whether it's eating a po-boy in a bar or grabbing a coffee at Cafe Du Monde. He masterfully captures the local dialects, bringing the music of language to the readers ears. The protagonist, Detective Dave Robicheaux lives on alone on a houseboat but spends his days dealing with the seedy side of the city. When a young drowned prostitute appears in the bayou where he has gone fishing, he becomes entangled in a case that is "not on his turf". Dave goes where angels fear to tread, endangering those he loves, while he works to see justice served. This action packed plot and vivid setting beg to made into a movie and left this reader hungry for more.
