Campfire/Shawn Sarles/290 pages

Campfire
Campfire is a young adult thriller that is super good!  The basic story revolves around 16 year old Maddie who is on a camping trip with her best friend, Chelsea.  They are out in the woods with handsome guide Caleb, various family members and family friends who have been vacationing together since the kids were tiny.  This year is special.  Maddie's older brother and his girlfriend will be going off to college and everyone kind of feels like this might be the last time they are all together.
Sitting around the campfire they start telling spooky stories that have everyone feeling uneasy.  Next morning, it looks like the stories are coming true!
I couldn't decide if this was a supernatural story or thriller with a great twist--and I'm not going to spoil it for you by telling you here!  Campfire is a creepy read with a bit of violence but a really good story with great characters.  Debut novel for Shawn Sarles but I'll look forward to his next eagerly.

Sherlock Holmes: The Red Tower/Mark A. Latham/288 pages (European Setting/Author's last name ends in "M"/Color name in title

Dr. Watson is away on holiday visiting an acquaintance, James
Sherlock Holmes - The Red Tower
Crain.  Watson has recently lost his wife, Mary, and Crain is under the influence of a medium who claims she can channel both Crain's mother and Watson's wife.  Watson is skeptical but the séance was very convincing and then a ghostly Mary appears to Watson in his room and two people are dead.  Time to call Sherlock!
Sherlock Holmes makes his appearance around page 130 and takes the rest of the book to methodically de-bunk the charlatans and prove the guilt or innocence of each of the characters.
Fans of Arthur Conan Doyle will not be disappointed in this 2018 addition to the Sherlock Holmes library

Bonnie & Clyde: The Making of a Legend/KarenBlumenthal/250 pages (True Crime)

Bonnie and Clyde: The Making of a LegendBonnie and Clyde:  The Making of a Legend is a new young adult book about one of America's most notorious couples.  The book opens when Bonnie and Clyde are in their teens and have not yet met.  From there it takes you (in chronological order) through car heists, robberies, murders, gun battles and prison breaks all the while portraying our pair as a nice young couple that seemed to get in trouble a lot.  Our author must have used family interviews for her book.  She seems intent on correcting some falsehood about Bonnie and Clyde and includes sections that let you know Bonnie was quite a poet and Clyde liked hot chocolate with marshmallows!  This is a very readable account of these famous outlaws.  The photos are a real bonus.

Then She Was Gone/Lisa Jewell/356 pages (European Setting)

Then She Was Gone: A Novel     Ellie Mack was a typical 15 year old girl when she went missing.  It has taken her mother, Laurel, almost ten years to recover from the shock, the betrayal and the loneliness of Ellie leaving but she has finally found a man she is interested in (her marriage ended shortly after Ellie went missing) and she is finally starting to realize what she did to her family and her life when she so totally shut down waiting for Ellie to be found.  The tragedy comes in the form of the man she is seeing, his family, his daughter and the strange twist of fate that brings closure to the story.
I have to admit that I am not sure I really liked this book but I was fascinated by the story and had to keep going to see how it ended

Summer of Us/Vinesse, Cecilia/314pages/Set in Europe

The Summer of Us      Summer of Us is a young adult novel that takes 5 recent high school graduates on a two week trip across Europe.  Aubrey is the planner, best friends with Rae and they have been planning this trip since middle school.  Aubrey's current boyfriend, Jonah, is tagging along planning to see Europe before he heads to New York for College.    Gabe and Clara round out our travel party--Clara with a secret crush on Rae and Gabe pining for Aubrey--just hoping to make some memories before college in Oregon.  Our troop travel to Amsterdam, Rome, Paris and more and by the end of the two weeks they have strengthen some relationships, forged new ones and everyone has a slightly different view of their future.  This was really an excellent read.  The characters act their age but have an admirable maturity when it comes to their plans after high school.  Their personalities mesh and clash in a totally believable and entertaining story

Three Rooms in Valerie's Head/Gaffney, David/119 pages (Graphic Novel)

The Three Rooms in Valerie's Head     Valerie is young woman with an unfortunate string of loser boyfriends.  Valerie keeps the memories of these guys "buried" in the basement of her mind and drags their corpses out every once in a while to re-visit her failures and maybe to try and see what went wrong.  The result is entertaining and oddly disturbing--you smile at a lot of the illustrations but come away with an overall feeling of loneliness and sadness.

A Gathering of Secrets/Linda Castillo/308 pages

Kate Burkholder is Chief of Police in a small Amish community where a barn fire kills Daniel Gingerich, a likeable, polite, hardworking young Amish teen.  At first no one can understand why anyone would want to hurt Daniel, but little by little Kate uncovers the true story behind Daniel's death and several others.  At the core of the investigation -- the Amish community.  There are sweet young girls and their protective parents.  There are the Amish customs and beliefs and threaded through the story are Dutch phrases that at first frustrated me but by the end of the book I knew what they meant before they were translated.  The author keeps you guessing until the end for this who-done-it.  Spoiler alert:  This is not one of those sweet, light Amish romances.  There is violence, rape, and suicide mixed in with the really gruesome descriptions of the burned bodies.  This one is a different type of read for me but I enjoyed it.

Leverage in Death/J.D. Robb/385 Pages

Futurist NYPSD cop, Eve Dallas is solving murder once again in this the 47th addition to the "in death" series of books.  I have read all of them and I always look forward to the newest edition and this one did not disappoint.
A family man and trusted member of the staff walks into an airline merger meeting with a suicide vest strapped to his chest.  He is distressed and apologizing but he sets off the bomb and eleven are dead.  Eve is primary on the case and she and her team are well on their way to picking the electronics apart, finding out the why and identifying all the possible suspects when there is a second suicide vested family man killing himself in an art salon.  The death toll is rising but Eve seems to have a handle on the mastermind behind it all and it is just a question of time before the bad guys are taken down.
Fast paced, believable, full of action and fun--I don't know how Robb keeps it fresh and keeps coming up with new slants, new stories, new adventures.  Great Read!

Abandoned/Allison Brennan/338p

Maxine Revere was abandoned by her mother at age 10.  After several years of keeping in touch by sending postcards once in a while, Mom stops collecting her trust fund money and is eventually declared dead.  Being an ace detective with cold cases, Max naturally wants to find out what really happened to her mother and stirs up a mess of conflict, murder, and lies in the process.   I found the premise interesting and the conclusion top notch but our author spent too much time back tracking and rehashing the old facts. I would be hard pressed to recommend this one.

The Mountain Between Us/Charles Martin/329 pages

SCCCLD Book Challenge: The Mountain Between Us/Charles Martin/329pages

WOW!  What a story of survival!  A snowstorm is threatening as Ben Payne is trying to get home after a medical conference/mountain climbing trip and Ashley Knox is trying to make it back home for her wedding.  When their flights are cancelled, Ben hires a private charter and invited Ashley to share the small plane.  Tough pilot, Grover, gets them off the ground and headed in the right direction before the storm hits but then suffers a heart attack and crashes the plane.  Not only is the distress signal equipment disabled on impact but Ben has broken ribs and Ashley has a fractured leg.  Adding to their problems, no one knew they were on the plane, Grover didn't file a flight plan and they are miles off course and literally in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the predicted snowstorm with no food.  You get most of that from the first chapters in the book.  The rest of the story is detailed with what they did trying to survive interwoven with Ben's narratives to his wife, Rachel.  You hear the story of Ben and Rachel from when they met in high school, share moments at lots of track events, medical school and marriage.  From what Ben shares with Ashley, you hear of a loving, caring marriage.  Ben and Rachel seem so perfect for each other that Ashley begins to wonder if she really has met her perfect mate or is she just settling for a trip down the aisle with a good friend.  Meanwhile, back on the mountain, they are freezing, starving and doing a good imitation of being the walking dead trying to find civilization.  Towards the end of the book you start to get the feeling that something is not right with Ben and his wife.  When the "surprise" ending was revealed, I had to go back and re-read portions of the book to see why I hadn't picked up on the details--had I miss read what was written?  But no, Martin has just done a marvelous story telling job.  Parts of the book had me in tears.  Parts of it had me feeling chilly in the middle of August.  Many parts had me marveling that anyone, Ashley or Ben, could have been able to do what they did.  This was a change of pace book for me--not my usual type--but I loved it and recommend it to all.

Pale As Death/Heather Graham/316 Pages

Sophie always knew she wanted to be a policewoman so she is living the dream as an LA detective.  On the scene of first one then quickly two murdered wannabe actresses, Sophie has the added complication of suddenly seeing a ghost who wants to help her solve her case.  When her partner is wounded, an FBI elite team shows up with "special" talents.  Bruce McFadden is the FBI consultant assigned to work with Sophie and he is perfect for the job since he, too, sees ghosts.  Bruce and Sophie are falling in love while solving the case with the help of more than one ghost.  This book is fast paced with believable characters and I did not figure out the "who-done-it" until the end!

Paradox/Catherine Coulter/434 pages

Sherlock and Savich are back again!  This time their adventure starts when their five year old son Sean is almost kidnapped--and it keeps on going with a split personality escaped inmate on a killing spree, a haunted mansion, abandoned bones from many people and a mystery surrounding a valuable belt buckle that is found where it should not have been.  Coulter creates her classic back and forth style telling several tales all at the same time and ends it all with them being masterfully woven together for a semi-surprising ending.  Great Read!
