Twice in a Blue Moon/ Christina Lauren/ 355 pgs

Normally, I love Christina Lauren's books but I struggled with this one. The writing is great but the pacing and focus are very much off. Tate is a sheltered young girl with a family secret. For her 18th birthday, her grandmother takes her on a trip to London. They become acquainted with Sam, another young American, and his grandfather and during the two week trip, Tate falls in love with Sam and shares her family secret with him. Then he betrays her and sells her story to a newspaper. He has his reasons but still, this is a huge betrayal of trust. We then skip ahead fourteen years. Tate is a well-known actress about to start filming a new movie. Guess who wrote that screenplay? Sam. The first third of the book, set in London, and showing Sam and Tate falling in love, is great. But the second third barely focuses on Sam and Tate's reunion and Sam is not remorseful at all about what he did and how it affected Tate. The last third is taken over by a secondary character who is not worth the pages. Overall, this is a very uneven read though I loved the peek into the film-making process.

Then Kyoko meets Moko’s huge family and their friendship becomes closer.  Kyoko also resolves the misunderstanding with her coworker Ren. Translated by: Tomo Kimura

Kyoko gets a job acting in one of Sho’s music videos as an angel and instead of ruining the video she gets one up on Sho by out acting him.  However later Sho interrupts a phone call from Ren, and now because of a misunderstanding Ren is angry with her and her friend Moko is keeping secrets. Hopefully her friend Maria the granddaughter of her agency’s president can help her. Translated by: Tomo Kimura

Ren, Sho’s nemesis in showbiz, and who works in the same agency as Kyoko didn’t originally like Kyoko, thinking she had joined showbiz only to get revenge on Sho, however he learns that she also did it for herself because she enjoys it.  Kyoko is now also going back to school to finish her education while working for LME. Then she gets an offer to be part of a music video for one of Sho’s songs and she doesn’t know what to do. Translated by: Tomo Kimura

Kyoko met Moko when she first auditioned for the agency and who also failed. Kyoko joins the LME (Love-Me) section of the talent agency and now works in the same agency as Ren Tsuruga, Sho’s nemesis, however Kyoko and Ren don’t get along.  The LME section wears eye catching hot pink jumpsuits and does odd jobs around the agency for people. On one of her jobs being a grunt and working behind the scenes lugging things around for people she gets the chance to dress up and act against an actress for her position.  The results although not what she expected fire up her desires to become an actress. She vows that she will get vengeance and that she will become even more famous than him. Kyokok gets a makeover and decides to join the talent agency that competes against Sho’s agency when that doesn’t work, she pesters one of the agents until he lets her audition. Evelyn Hugo is an aging and reclusive Hollywood star that has been married seven times.  Monique Grant is an unknown magazine reporter.  Evelyn is ready to tell her life story but only to Monique.  Monique is scheduled to report to Evelyn's Manhattan apartment for the interview that will jump start her career.  Over the course of several days Evelyn tells her story of getting to Hollywood in the 1950s to start her acting career that lasted through the 1980s and the seven husbands she had along the way.  Towards the end of Evelyn's story the reader discovers the connection between this Hollywood star and unknown journalist.

How to be a Grown-Up/Emma McLaughlin & Nicola Kraus/240 pages

Rory, his wife, freelances as a stylist for photo shoots. Between caring for their two children, trying to bolster up Blake's self-esteem and reasoning with  two bosses who are clearly unsuited for leadership, Rory's hands are full.

McLaughlin and Kraus, authors of the Nanny Diaries, have written a funny and sometimes poignant story of a woman faced with a changing world. Longevity and experience are discarded in favor of youth and bad behavior. Quick, fun read.
