The Great Alone/Kristen Hannah/435 pgs

I have to admit up front that I was very reluctant to read this book.  But, it was suggested by one of the women in my book club, so I felt an obligation to read it.  It did not disappoint.

This is a story about a troubled family who take a chance on a new life in the rugged land of Alaska. Ernt Allbright is a troubled Vietnam POW who was presumed dead, but was released after five years as a POW.  His return to his family is both wonderful and stressful.  He suffers with nightmares and he drinks too much.  Ernt decides that his family needs a new start and they pack a VW bus and move to Alaska where a deceased army buddy has left Ernt his homestead.

With the help of the locals, the Albright family learns how to survive the harsh winters. Unfortunately, those same long, harsh winters are torturous for Ernt and his family suffers, especially his wife Cora.  Their daughter Leni finds an outlet away from the house at school where she meets the only local boy there her age.  The young man is the son of a man Ernt hates which means the young friends must meet in secret.  And one secret meeting changes everyone's life.

Hannah keeps the reader fully engaged and not wanting to put down this book.
