basic story--Ruthie's mother, Alice, is missing. There is the side story--
Katherine's husband died recently, still grieving because of the death of
their son, and she discovers he had been dishonest with her right before
his death and goes on a quest to find out where he had been and what he
was doing the day he died. Then there is the background story (which
forms the nucleus of the tale) that tells of Sara who was raised by her
Auntie, a woman with knowledge of potions and cures. Sara's daughter,
Gertie, dies when she is only six years old and Sara cannot live without
her. She finds instructions left to her from her Auntie that seem to be
instructions on bringing the dead back.
These three stories are spooky but somehow believable. You can just see all the events falling in to place exactly as written and you are hungry to read more. The ending was not what I was expecting but I am at a loss as to how it could have ended any other way. This is a really great read!
