The Casual Vacancy/503pgs/JK Rowling (international author)

The book starts out with the death of Barry Fairbrother who, in the small town of Pagford, held a seat on the Council. His death leaves a vacancy on the Council and in this small town, where everybody knows everybody, there's a race to fill it with their own intentions.

While the adults are immersed in politics, the teens are dealing with their own issues. Gaia had to unwillingly leave her home in London and move to the small town. Andrew is dealing with an abusive father. "Fats" feels disconnected with his adoptive family. Sukhvinder, whose family is the only non-white family in town, goes through self-esteem issues. And Krystal has a severely drug addicted mother, whom she's trying to take care of while raising her younger brother.

Ultimately, all of these people's lives in this small town connect in some way. The death of Barry has an impact on each individual, more than they would know.

I really enjoyed this book, as I do with most of Rowling's books. There were times, specifically when it was all about the towns politics and Council, that I zoned out a bit and couldn't really get into it. There are A LOT of characters which was confusing at first. I noticed that Rowling uses unique or not really common names that make it easier for the reader to remember the character. Overall, I recommend this book.
