Finding Baba Yaga/Yolen, Jane/143 pages



     Finding Baba Yaga is BEAUTIFUL!  This young adult novel in verse is the story of a young girl in a bad home.  Her father is abusive, her mother doesn't help and finally, she runs away.  Natasha is
Finding Baba Yaga: A Short Novel in Versetired, cold, lonely and sick of eating stolen candy bars when she comes across as enchanted cottage where Baba Yaga lives.  Natasha lives in this house in the woods (on chicken legs that moves at Baba Yaga's command) and while she doesn't seem to excel at anything, she learns knitting and sewing and how to drive the motor and pedestal.  Another girl joins them for a while but goes away when the prince shows up.  Natasha finds contentment in her new life--maybe not joy or normalcy but peace.  She thinks that she might become Baba Yaga when Baba Yaga dies.
     I very much enjoyed this book.  It is a quick read and you find yourself smiling at the way the content is presented even though much of the story is sad.  Can't go wrong with a Jane Yolen book!
