Imposter / Antony John / 307 pages

What surprised and pleased me most about this book is Mr. John's acknowledgement of Danielle Borsch as his go to source for Los Angeles insider information.  Ms. Borsch is an avid bibliophile who claimed Left Bank Books as her home stomping grounds.  Both she and Mr. John have done an incredible job making the setting an integral, realistic part of this story.  Eighteen year old Seth Crane thinks he has the chance of a lifetime when a Hollywood scout asks him to star in his new movie after watching him play Romeo in the school play.  The fifty thousand dollar paycheck will enable him to help his struggling motherless family.  His father's employment possibilities are severely limited due to his stroke, and his younger brother Gant's photography doesn't pay much.  The film is to be cutting edge, "scripted reality."  The famous teen stars originally signed have had a lover's spat and quit.  Seth and Anna Leigh agree to be filmed "at all times" and have signed a nondisclosure agreement.  Suffice it to say the production company is not peopled by good people.  This thriller may well be Mr. John's best book yet...although Five Flavors of Dumb and The Elemental Series should not be missed.
