Serafina and the Black Cloak / Robert Beaty / 293 pages / October Challenge - Scary Book

This is a most unusual premise for a scary story with a truly spectacular setting.  Serafina and her father have secretly lived in the basement of the Biltmore Estate for years.  Pa is the maintenance man responsible for keeping the household smoothly and flawlessly running.  Serafina is the chief rat catcher.  This position implies that perhaps Serafina is not your average child.  She has yellow eyes, only four toes on each foot, and talents as yet undiscovered.  When children guests to the estate begin disappearing, Serafina knows it is the mysterious man in the black cloak who is responsible.  She teams up with the estate owner's nephew, Braeden Vanderbilt, to discover the man's identity and end his reign of terror.  Filled with intriguing details of Biltmore and the Vanderbilt family, Serafina and the Black Cloak is a delightfully suspenseful scary story with a peculiar twist.
