Messenger of Fear/Grant/260 pages - scary story

So much potential, but it just fell flat. The Messenger sees darkness in the hearts of the young, he has been appointed to uphold balance, to make sure justice is carried out, to make people pay for their evil actions or deeds. You have a choice, you can accept your punishment or you can play a game. If you win, you are set free. And if you lose, the consequences are dire. The main story is about Mara, who is to become the Messenger's apprentice, but we really never find out too much about the main character. The story jumps around and we never really care much about the story or the characters. The author maybe  using this book as an introduction to a series, but I think he probably lost most of his readers with a lackluster book one!
