The Black Stallion and Satan / Walter Farley / 208 pages / Deceased Author Challenge

"From back lot to Triple Crown champion..."  Ridden by Alex Ramsay, Satan was The Black's first foal.  Alec and The Black were lone survivors of a shipwreck.  Alex brought him home and he and Henry Dailey trained him on a back lot in Flushing.  After they arranged a race between two well-known horses and The Black, an Arab chieftain by the name of Abu Ishak turned up and proved the horse was his.  He took The Black back to Arabia but promised Alec his first foal.  Now Satan has won the Triple Crown and is unbeaten.  Alec, his owner and jockey, is riding high in the big time...  A letter arrives explaining that Abu Ishak has died and his death is due to The Black.  The family would have destroyed the horse but Abu had left a letter willing the horse to Alec.  When The Black arrives, Henry encourages Alec to keep him secret.  An early norming race, a ticket, and an erstwhile reporter lead to its revelation.  Against Henry's advice, Alec intends to race the wild, at times uncontrollable, Black in an international race.  Fury, disease, fire, and heroism mar and mark the race and its aftermath. This is an awesome read...still appealing to today's youth.
