O Pioneers / Willa Cather / 206 pages / Deceased Author Challenge

Alexandra Bergson has the curse of always being surrounded by little men.  She single-handedly saved her family farm with her hard work, determination, ingenuity, and good business sense.  When her brothers wanted to abandon the farm as hopeless, she convinced them that they should look to the future and expand instead.  The potential love of her life, Carl Lindstrom, an artist, sells his farm to become an engraver and later travels to Alaska to make something of himself.  A neighbor, Ivar, is shunned by his neighbors for his strange, protective rantings, but is a saving source of knowledge for Alex.  Another neighbor, Frank Shabotta, a difficult, taciturn, and unsociable individual, kills her brother and his (Frank's) own wife.  Alex is a fine example of the triumphant, strong-willed women who settled America's untamed frontier.

"People have to snatch at happiness."
"Freedom so often means that one isn't needed anywhere."
"The history of every country believes in the heart of a man or woman."
"It sometimes pays to mend other people's fences."
