Behind Closed Doors / Elizabeth Haynes / 484 pages

This would have been a frightening cautionary tale if it were written for teens/YA.  As it was intended for adult consumption, however, it is a shocking portrayal of a highly dysfunctional family's vacation in Greece gone horribly wrong.  Fifteen year old Scarlett Rainsford is snatched off the street where she had gone to meet her new Greek heart-throb, Nico.  Was he involved in the snatch?  Scarlett witnesses several murders of young girls as she is forcibly transported to her destination.  Her disappearance remains unsolved for ten years, when she is discovered in a raid on a brothel in connection with another investigation, again involving multiple murders, drugs, and human trafficking.  Can Scarlett's case shed light on the current investigation?  DSC Lou Smith, who worked Scarlett's case as a police constable, is called to question her.  That they had never managed to find her was one of the biggest regrets of Lou's career.  This is an edge-of-the-seat thriller with a shocking conclusion...a surprising revelation of a loved one's duplicity.
