Unbroken / Laura Hillenbrand / 500 pages

This is the story of American heroism during World War II.  Extensive research and skillful writing place the reader within the terrible events of the time.  Focusing on the life of Louis Zamperini, an army air force bombardier, we view the horrors of war first hand and witness the radical changes it wrought to civilians as well as servicemen.  Louis, a former Olympic runner, was captured by the Japanese after his plane went down.  He and two crewmen had survived shark attack, hunger, and thirst as they drifted aboard their life rafts.  These deprivations were slight compared to life as a POW.  With excellent photographs, a gripping, driving narrative, and an intense sensitivity, Unbroken is a sterling tale of one of our darkest periods in history.

"Resentment is the emotion that nails every one of us onto the cross of his ruined past."

  1. This author does such a fantastic job of bringing something awful to life without seeming to sensationalize it. The men in the POW camps were brought to life and I agonized over every day of their imprisonment. This is a truly incredible story, and Hillenbrand tells it perfectly.
