The Program / Suzanne Young / 405 pages / April Challenge Rain

The program is a solution for the teen suicide pandemic.  One in three teens ultimately commit suicide.  The program targets teens exhibiting symptoms and mandates mandatory removal of the teen to a safe environment.  Sloane has lost her brother to the international epidemic but has his best friend, James, to help her through the debilitating effects of his death.  Sloane knows that to exhibit symptoms of sorrow/depression publicly will land her in The Program - which supposedly cures depression, but erases memories.  Are you still you if all your memories are gone?  Sloane and James make a pact to protect each other from the The Program.  Is this possible?  This was certainly a mesmerizing book, fraught with tension, and fueled by the determination and the clear-headedness of the protagonist, intent upon preserving her individuality, and ultimately her love.
