Precious Thing / Colette McBeth / 291 pages / April Challenge Rain

Would you break your friend's arm and allow her to break yours to avoid PE class?  That is exactly what fourteen year old new girl Rachel and fifteen year old enigma Clara do, and so begins their intense friendship.  Clara had been away recovering from a breakdown, but the two resumed their friendship upon her return.  On the night Clara, an artist, invited news reporter Rachel out for drinks with the snarky girls they had avoided in high school, Rachel had tried to beg off and Clara did saying she had the flu but would still come.  She never showed up - at least not while Rachel was still at the pub.  She is a missing person.  CCTV cameras reveal that she was last seen in the company of Jonny, Rachel's boyfriend who is supposed to be in Afghanistan.  Rachel learns "that you can be close to someone for a lifetime and not know who they are...most of the time we only see what we want to see."  Tess Gerritsen said Precious Thing "will chill you to the bone."  This story set in London and Brighton, England (and, of course, featuring lots of rain) is written as one long letter from Rachel to Clara, interspersed with dated flashbacks.  It is riveting!...and surprising!

"If you're not looking, it's hard to find something."
