Death of a Nightingale/Lene Kaaberbol & Agnete Friis/329 pgs.
I can't speak highly enough of this series, and this is the best entry, yet! Danish Red Cross nurse Nina Borg is the key player in the series. She involves herself with helping illegal immigrants needing medical treatment-- which has taken a major toll on her family life. In this third book in the series, Nina is a nurse at the Coal-House Camp for refugees. Over the years, she has been involved with mail-order bride Natasha Doroshenko, a Ukrainian convicted of the attempted murder of her Danish fiance, Michael Vestergaard, and her young daughter, Katerina. When Michael actually is murdered, Natasha is the immediate suspect. She escapes custody, but won't leave the country without Katerina. Katerina is being cared for by Nina, and is being used as bait to bring Natasha out of hiding. However, a parallel story is being told about the terrible famine that occurred in the Stalinist Ukraine in 1934. How these two story lines merge makes for a suspenseful, edge of your seat, read!
