Gaia goes to the Enclave to discover the fate of her parents. She learns that they are to be executed. She tries to save them and becomes ensnared in the politics of the Enclave. Her birthmarks - or freckles, her father's love of code and fine stitchery, her relationship with the Protectorat's son, and Gaia's resourcefulness and bravery are carefully interwoven into this futurist medical thriller.
