This story is based on an actual gorilla who now lives at Zoo Atlanta. Ivan spent twenty-seven years of his life alone in a cage. In the book, Ivan had friends: Stella and Ruby, the elephants, and Bob, the dog. He is unable to save Stella, but his artwork saves Ruby, Bob, and himself. If you don't cry when you read this book or go to the zoo and look at the animals with renewed respect...well...you just will!!
