"Antarctica, the southernmost continent, [is]a land of ice and sky." Twelve-year-old Victoria has won first place in the Wild X-Plorer science contest. The prize is a trip to Antarctica where the student will be the "the protagonist for the launch of [a] new on-line adventure travel series." Even though Vicky had hacked into the school's database and changed the grades of a school bully and re-written a counselor's report on Vicky and the principal declares her ineligible, Ms. Madeleine Sinclair insists that Vicky will go. They are both "renegades, innovators, on the cutting edge, pioneers, explorers." Unfortunately, the expedition has ulterior motives - to open Antarctica to tourism.
