Told by Frank, Herbie's older deceased brother who died of lymphatic cancer, Restless is a ghost story with a twist. Herbie has everyone fooled into thinking he is a slacker, hanging around Main Street, drinking and smoking. He is, however, fourth in his class and has exceptionally high SAT scores. He quits soccer when he realizes he will not be able to work with the new soccer coach, and goes out for football and cross country instead. Herbie often runs through the cemetery where Frank is buried and encounters the ghost of Eamon Connelly, an Irishman who made his way from Limerick to Dyberry Forks, PA in 1887. He fell to his death while climbing a nearby cliff. Eamon is an ancestor of Frank and Herbie and is helped into the afterlife by Frank. Interesting philosophical and physical discussions of life after death, split family relationships, and commitment to team make this relatively short book a worthwhile read.
"...consciousness goes on even after the body expires."
"...the memory after all is what makes us human."
