Reginald has run up staggering debts and his father believes that he must be wed to tame him down. Annabelle has run off with Till and when they are discovered, he jumps ship. Annabelle's reputation is ruined and her father believes that no one will have her for a wife. Reginald's father has made his fortune in coal and is looked down upon by the members of high society, including Annabelle's family. The fathers strike a bargain to wed their children.
