This is one of the Show Me Readers nominee and was a very enjoyable book. It is the story of a dog in Iraq who adopts a Marine major - Brian Dennis. He decides to follow him back to his base - over 70 miles away through the desert. Once there, the marines have to give him up after they are reported for having a pet - not allowed.
